The Scottish Rite of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction employs caps to signify the status of its members. Some members who receive the 32° chose to wear black caps, like this one. Sidney Ross Baxter (1920-2010), the long-time assistant to the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, wore this cap for many years.
