Officers' Jewels

Title

Officers' Jewels

Description

In 1796, the newly chartered Washington Lodge of Roxbury, Massachusetts, ordered “one Sett of Silver Masons Jewels” from silversmith and fellow Freemason, Paul Revere. Although this group of twelve jewels has been preserved together by Washington Lodge for generations, the original group of jewels likely numbered nine or ten. When the lodge commissioned this set of jewels, it had only nine officers. The offices of Tyler (crossed swords), Marshall (the empty four-sided square, that originally contained a baton, and Chaplain (the plain circle and the circles with Bibles at the center) were added after 1796.
