Description
An account of the resource
Unlike lodge officer jewels, Past Master’s jewels were usually purchased by the lodge and then presented to the outgoing Master in appreciation of his leadership. The recipient wore his Past Master’s jewel to signify his experience. Following a Scottish model, Past Master’s jewels presented in America in the early 1800s often featured the Masonic symbols of a sun within compasses with a quadrant connecting the legs of the compasses. The brethren of The Massachusetts Lodge in Boston gave this engraved jewel to Thomas Redman (1773-1820) in 1809.

For more on this object please visit the online collection record here.
