This print was engraved by John Galland (active 1796-1817) around 1798 after a print by engraver David Edwin (1776-1841). Both Galland and Edwin’s prints cite F. Bartoli as the painter of the portrait. Little is known about Bartoli, and no such painting of Washington is recorded today. The print, a hand-colored stipple engraving, depicts Washington as a general. It may have been inspired by Washington’s reappointment as Commander-in-Chief.
