Apotheosis of Washington, ca. 1800.

George Washington died of complications from an infection at the age of 67, at his home in Mount Vernon, Virginia. The American public produced many elaborate and public displays of mourning after George Washington’s death in December of 1799. Artists and manufacturers marketed memorial goods of all kinds— printed textiles, paintings, clocks, and ceramics— in his name.  Washington’s image, illustrated and remembered differently at different times, reflected changing cultural ideals and is visible today in prints, memorabilia, currency, monuments, visual arts, and popular culture.
